Description of Case: Plaintiff underwent mastectomy for breast cancer in her left breast followed by reconstructive surgery performed by defendant plastic surgeon. Defendant performed reconstruction using tissue expanders with subsequent implantation of saline implant. Following successful tissue expander reconstruction, defendant surgeon performed nipple reconstruction. At time of nipple reconstruction, previously placed implant was punctured during injection of local anesthetic. Plaintiff developed infection in breast wall requiring removal of implant and subsequent reconstruction of breast.
