Description of Case: Plaintiff’s Decedent, a 71-year-old man, underwent a radical neck dissection for cancer of the mouth and pharynx on January 26, 2000. Following surgery, Decedent was transferred to the ICU in stable condition. On January 28, 2000, he was transferred to a telemetry unit to closely monitor his cardiac status. A blood transfusion was ordered due to post-op anemia and was never administered to the Decedent and there was no follow-up on this order. On January 29, 2000, Decedent was found pulseless and without a rhythm. He was pronounced dead following attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
